► What is the Co-Parenting Program?
The Alaska Court System Co-Parenting Program is for parents who struggle to co-parent with each other. This program has:
- a 6-unit online class called Parenting Without Conflict, and
- 3 free coaching sessions with a Court System Parenting Plan Facilitator.
► How much does this cost?
$43 rather than $69.99, if you sign up through the Alaska Court System Co-Parenting Program Webpage. The court negotiated this special rate and court staff provides coaching for free.
► What will I learn in the online program?
You will learn new ways to talk to the other parent. The goal is to make communicating with each other less frustrating. You will also learn how to make proposals to each other about topics involving your children, and how to respond to each other’s proposals.
► How do the coaching sessions work?
Parents schedule separate, one-hour sessions with the coach to talk about what they are learning. The coach helps parents practice the skills taught in the online classes.
► Who can participate in the program?
Anyone in a court case can sign up for the internet class at the discounted rate through the court's Co-Parenting Program webpage. Parents struggling to co-parent with each other can ask the court to order them to the coaching part of the program. Read the next FAQ.
► How do the other parent and I sign-up for the program with both the online program and the coaching sessions?
If both parents want to participate in the program, parents can fill out Joint Request for Court’s Co-Parenting Program, MED-460. Both parents must sign the form. File it with the court. When you sign this form, you are agreeing:
-
to complete:
- 6-hour online Parenting Without Conflict program [the judge will provide the link in the order],
- 3 free coaching sessions provided by the Parenting Plan Resolution Office, and
- 3 program surveys;
- to attend all scheduled coaching sessions;
- lawyers will not attend coaching sessions;
- coaches will only report to the court whether or not parents completed the units and attended the coaching sessions;
- not to call the coach to testify to provide any opinion about participation; and
- the judge may ask parents about what they learned.
The judge will sign an order for coaching if they think it is appropriate.
► What if I want to participate in the program but the other parent does not want to?
This program works best if both parents participate. Parents learn new skills and it is important for both parents to use these skills when co-parenting. If the other parent does not want to participate, ask the judge about the program at your next hearing.
► What if I don’t want the coaching sessions and only want the online program, can I still sign up?
Yes. You can still sign up for the Alaska Court System Co-Parenting Program . Use this link to be sure you receive the discounted price of $43.00.
► What happens when I finish the program?
The coach will inform the court that you completed the program. The judge may ask you questions about what you learned. You will be sent 2 survey to complete: 1 when you finish, and 1 six months later.
