Alaska Court System Self-Help

The person who files the appeal is the "appellant." The person against whom the appeal is filed is the "appellee." This means that the appellee responds to the appeal that the appellant filed. Generally, the appellee’s position is that the Supreme Court should affirm the Superior Court’s decision because it was correct. The appellee should be active at the following times during the appeal:

1. after receiving the appellant's papers starting the appeal
2. after deciding to file a cross-appeal
3. after receiving the appellant's opening brief to write the appellee's brief
4. after all briefs are filed to prepare for oral argument if one of the parties requested it
